Skin Care – Must-Have Moisturizers

Moisturizing is an important step in taking care of your skin regardless of skin type and age. For skin to be healthy, smooth and supple, it needs to be adequately hydrated to prevent the outbreak of skin problems resulting from dry skin such as wrinkles and scaly skin. Moisturizing also masks imperfections like acne blemishes, evens out skin tone and texture, and creates a barrier from harsh elements such as pollution and cold weather. When you moisturize, you lock in moisture to the skin, maintaining the water content of the skin and keeping it hydrated. Dermatologists and beauty experts advise that moisturizing should be done at least once a day.

You might be wondering why there are many kinds of moisturizers-some use plant extracts, while others use Vitamins. There are oil-based and water-based moisturizers as well. Each moisturizer has a different formula, so you have to choose what is best for your skin and what will sufficiently provide for your skin needs. Finding the perfect one can be daunting, but by knowing your skin care priorities, you will be able to determine what you need in a moisturizer.

People who have oily skin can benefit from daily moisturizing. Since what you have to preserve is the water content of the skin and not the oil content, you have to use non-comedogenic or oil-free moisturizers. It may be hard to find a moisturizer that will not clog your pores, which can cause acne breakouts and make your skin problems worse, so choose wisely. Read the ingredient labels and ask your dermatologist for recommendations.

In contrast, people with dry skin are advised to use moisturizers that are oil-based. Having dry skin can be attributed to a number of factors: cold weather, exposure to sun’s harmful rays, the use of harsh soaps when bathing, among others. Cleansing your body with soap and water not only removes dirt and grime, but also the natural oils of your skin. That is why the use of moisturizers immediately after a bath or shower is important because they bind the moisture from the bath you just took to the skin. Without moisturizing, dry skin can result to even worse skin problems such as discoloration, dry patches and wrinkles. As women age, wrinkles become one of their biggest concerns. Using anti-aging creams with moisturizers are most advantageous, but it is important that you remember not to over-moisturize or you may clog your pores. As always, choose the best one for your skin needs to maximize its benefits.

During the day, there is also a way for you to moisturize your skin. Wear cosmetics and beauty products such as lipsticks, make-up foundations and eye shadows that have moisturizers in their ingredients, so that your skin stays hydrated even while you are wearing make-up. Other skin care products like toners, cleansers and facial masks also have moisturizers that exfoliate and protect your skin. You may want to use a different moisturizer for your body and your face. Body moisturizers generally concentrate on skin hydration, while facial moisturizers focus on the prevention of wrinkles and premature ageing caused by dry skin.

Your Child’s Skin Needs Your Attention

We hardly remember taking care of our skin as a child. Rather playing in mud, running on the sand on a sunny day is what our happy childhood memories consist of. Child skin care thus makes up to a large extent to what is called as motherhood. As a mother, now I remember all the things that are necessary for a child.

Skin Care for Newborns

Most of us have experienced the joy of feeling a baby’s skin. Being extremely soft and tender, your baby needs your gentle handling. The bottom and folded areas of baby’s skin demand much attention as they are highly prone to rashes that manifest as reddened eruptions that would be extremely painful for your baby. The major rules of treating rashes in babies are:
• Do not apply soap on the rashes daily. Twice or thrice a week would do.
• Applying moisturizer or Vaseline worsens the area as these retain moisture.
• Pat dry the affected parts of skin and leave them open in air for as long as possible. Do not rub to wipe.
• Try using different brands of diaper.
• Mild baby powder could be of use.

Other important issues involve using gentle soaps for your baby that would contain coconut, palm or olive oil. Regular application of moisturizer keeps the skin supple. Wash your baby’s clothes separately using detergents that are non-irritants.

Skin Care for Children

Now that your child is no more a newborn, he is now more understanding and his skin could be matched with yours, although they still have the trace of a baby’s skin. This is a time when you must make your kid understand how important hygiene is. Make washing hands with soap after play, a habit. Staying under shade during peak sunny hours could save them from a long-term effect into skin cancer. Cautiously it is possible to apply a broad-range sunscreen before they leave home. Wearing loose-fitting and well-covered clothes in summer could counter the sun rays.
